Covid secure copper foiled stained glass retreat

Covid secure copper foiled stained glass retreat (Tiffany technique) two day course 10am to 5pm (approx.); £190 per person.

Lift your spirit with some socially distanced creativity on a two day covid secure copper foiled stained glass retreat in East Kent. If you missed our Lent retreat due to the lockdown, join us this May instead and make a copper foiled suncatcher to take home.

For as long as Covid restrictions apply, we’re limiting numbers to a maximum of 4 clients per retreat, to ensure that 2m social distancing can be maintained.

This copper foiled stained glass retreat will combine the opportunity to learn the art of stained glass with time for prayer and / or contemplation. To allow time for this, we’ll be making simple suncatchers suitable for hanging. People with prior experience could make a 3D candle holder instead if they prefer.

The retreat is perfect for beginners and those with a little experience that they’d like to build on. It’s also perfect for those of you who have to work on Sundays!

You don’t have to be a Christian to come on our retreats, provided you’re happy to respect the faith of those who are. You’re welcome regardless of your beliefs if you respect others’ views.

What’s involved?

There’ll be the opportunity to start the day with tea, coffee, pastries and morning prayer (all of which are optional).

If you’re new to stained glass, we’ll then teach you to cut and shape glass with confidence.

Next you get to choose your stained glass cartoon (template), or modify one of ours, or create your own. Before lunch there’ll be the opportunity to pause for midday prayer if you’d like to.

Then choose from our wide range of coloured glass & cut it to size and shape before learning the “Tiffany” technique of applying copper foil. This is really relaxing when you get the hang of it and lends itself to either friendly chatter & discussion or quiet contemplation.

You’ll probably get part way through your foiling on the first day. We’ll have time for refreshments in the afternoon and will end the day with evening prayer (again optional).

The second day will follow a similar framework, with time for prayer & more copper foiling.

You’ll then solder your panel together. You can choose whether to leave the solder its natural silvery colour or use a patina to make it coppery again or black.

Is this a Catholic retreat, a Church of England retreat, a Methodist retreat, a Baptist retreat?

For the guided prayer, we use the Celtic Daily Office from the lovely people at the Northumbria Community. These are non denominational, i.e. they’re Christain prayers for people of all denominations. Visitors with no specific faith have also found them very uplifting. If you have a different faith, you’re welcome to use your own prayers.

What will I take home with me?

You will make a suncatcher to hang in a window, in the garden or wherever you wish. The shape is entirely up to you, though we do have designs for hanging crosses which you’re welcome to use as inspiration. People with previous experience can make a 3D candle holder if they prefer.

If you’re a quick worker, you might have time to make a second item, but the idea of a retreat is not to put you under pressure to make a complex masterpiece!

What’s included in the cost?

All materials and use of all tools are included, together with lunches and refreshments both days. Special diets can be catered for if you let us know in advance. Please bring your own face covering.
