Stained glass mosaic retreat day on Maundy Thursday- eco friendly & sustainable
Join us for a stained glass mosaic retreat day on Maundy Thursday, 2nd April 2026. As Good Friday approaches, take time out to reflect with us and to capture your thoughts and feelings in stained glass mosaic.
It’s a craft that’s easy to get started with; no glass cutting skills are needed. You don’t even need a picture to work from; your creation can evolve as the day progresses.
Our glass studio is nestled among vineyards, wheat fields and rolling fields of sheep (and probably lambs at this time of year). We’re in the picturesque Kent Downs national landscape (area of outstanding natural beauty).
A stained glass mosaic retreat day is the perfect opportunity to learn to make environmental art from glass offcuts and makes the perfect creative retreat in the beautiful village of Chilham, near Canterbury, Kent.
What does it cost?
A day’s retreat including all materials, lunch and refreshments still costs just £95 per person. There are no single supplements either.
What’s stained glass mosaic?
Also known as glass appliqué, it’s a style of glass art that uses offcuts of stained glass that would otherwise be wasted. Instead you get to transform them into a work of art to take home, to remind you of your day .
There’s more information here.
What can I make?
In a day, you can make a panel of around A5 size, square, rectangular or a long, thin suncatcher with hanging loop. It can have an almost unlimited number of pieces. You don’t need to be able to cut glass; we have a huge range of precut pieces of glass in all sorts of colours and shapes.
Is there an age limit?
For our retreat, we’re mainly focussing on over-18s. But if your young son / daughter / dependant would enjoy a day with you in a quiet, reflective environment working with sharp pieces of glass, then they’re welcome too.
Is it only for Christians?
We welcome anyone to our courses, classes and retreats. While this stained glass mosaic retreat day will be focussing on the events of Maundy Thursday and Easter, you’re welcome to come, whatever your faith, provided that you’re happy to accept and respect the beliefs of others.
It’s Maundy Thursday. Will I have to have my feet washed?
Taking your shoes off in a studio where we work with sharp pieces of glass is never a good idea, so no, we won’t be washing feet in the studio. Also it makes some people feel uncomfortable, which is the last thing that we want.
Where are you and how do I get there?
We’re on the A252 in Chilham, midway between Ashford (Kent), Canterbury and Faversham. We’re a 15 minute stroll from Chilham railway station (for services between London, Canterbury & Ramsgate; change at Ashford if you’re catching the high speed train out of London). Chilham is also served by a number of buses from Ashford and Canterbury and is a short way from national cycle route 18.
If you’re coming to enjoy the area for several days, do bring your walking shoes & / or your cycle. Beautiful Chilham village is on the North Downs Way, a long distance footpath with stunning views, & has lots of other walking and cycling routes too.
Our “where to stay” page has some suggestions of accommodation within walking distance. There’s also a Caravan Club certificated campsite up the hill behind us.
