Covid secure fused glass class in progress

Covid secure glass fusing improvers’ day, 20th November

We’re running a Covid secure glass fusing improvers’ day on Friday 20th November, in our Kent studio.

Our Covid secure glass fusing improvers’ course is perfect for anyone who’s done a day or more of glass fusing and wants to take it further.

How do you keep it Covid secure?

All equipment is sterilised between users. You’ll be given your own set of tools to use for the day & won’t need to share. You’ll have your own teatowel for drying your glass & you’ll have a table to yourself. (You can share with a menber of your own household though, if they come too.) Paper towels have replaced the fabric hand towels, & there are four sinks available for handwashing as well as hand sanitising gel both upstairs and downstairs.

There’ll be a maximum of four spaces on the course, to allow ample room for social distancing. Please bring a face covering in case you need help with anything from less than 2m away.

We’ll keep 2m apart wherever possible, & wear face coverings if we need to get any closer (e.g. if you need help with something  & want to be close enough to see clearly). Only one person / household will put their work into the kiln at a time and the kiln shelves will be heat-sanitised between uses.

If you develop symptoms or have to self-isolate on the day of your course, you’ll be able to reschedule at no extra cost (or request a refund).

What does the course involve?

You’ll be offered a welcoming coffee / tea etc. while we have a recap of what happens to your glass in the kiln. This might be new to you if you’ve started your glass fusing elsewhere. Or it might not have sunk in last time. You might have new questions to ask, or you might even be hoping to get a kiln for Christmas!

Then come upstairs into the studio and brush up on your glass cutting if it’s been a while. Otherwise leap into your first project of the day.

If it’s been a while since you last worked with glass, you’ll have the opportunity to make your first item from window (float) glass, to get back into the swing of things. Then we’ll move on to creating with Bullseye fusing glass, frit, confetti, stringers, our homemade funky frit balls…

You might like to have a go at kiln carving. Perhaps you’d rather explore reactive effects between different kinds of Bullseye glass. Why not try tack fusing for a textured effect, play with the metallic finish of steel blue glass or perhaps try some iridescent glass? The choice is yours.

There’ll be a great range of fusing glass to choose from. The tools will all be provided, as will lunch, refreshments and free on-site parking. Oh, and soap, hand sanitiser and paper towels…

You’ll need to bring a face covering with you, but (unless government rules change) you’ll only need to wear it when / if you’re less than 2m from someone else.

What can I make?

Included in the course fee is enough Bullseye fusing glass to make something up to 20 x 20cm square as well as your first item(s) made from window glass. You might like to make a window hanging, a small dish or two, some coasters, keyrings & / or jewellery, Christmas gifts for those “hard to buy for” people… The choice is yours. If you have loftier ambitions, extra glass can be bought from us; if you’re planning to make a splashback for your cooker, please let us know in advance!!! (We also offer kiln hire for your own projects…)

We’ll give you as much (or as little) help as you need. There’s nothing we enjoy more than watching our glass fusing improvers’ delight at what they’ve achieved on our course!

Do I take my glass home at the end of the day?

In short, no. Your glass will be fused after your course. This takes around 24 hours (plus a further 24 hours if you then want it slumped to make something 3D). This means that it won’t be ready to take home on the same day as your class.

You’re welcome to either come back to collect it, or it can be posted to you (this typically costs around £7 depending on its size & weight, as obviously the packaging is very important!).
